Foundation Repair – Worcester, Massachusetts
|
Project:
This eighty year old building in Worcester was built over peat using conventional concrete caissons. The caissons were not constructed properly, as the foundation settled significantly in those areas. Several foundation cracks opened just above the caissons (shown to the left). The building houses a busy store and construction needed to take place during the store's open hours. |
Engineering Design:
The soil borings showed the peat deposit extended to about 20 feet below grade and the piles needed to penetrate that soft layer of soil. Spaulding Associates Consulting Engineers designed an underpinning system consisting of helical piles and new concrete foundation elements to support the building.
Project Details:
Northeast Helical successfully installed the helical piles from inside the building during the store's busy holiday season. The portable equipment allowed the piles work to take place with minimal working room. Some of the helical piles advanced to over 45 feet deep. |
